We started with the classic British breeds on our farm, but decided we needed to move towards a slightly different approach - climate, regenerative practices and some strong family connections to Scotland led us in the direction of the Scottish Highland breed. This was at a time where popularity had skyrocketed, and breeding stock were scarce. We embarked down the embryo transfer route, and used a Highland bull in the interim to get a handle on breed characteristics and behaviours (and still have a working bull for our Angus of course!)
We used our heard of Angus as recipients in the embryo transfer program. The embryos we used were all out of dams from Bairnsley Highlands - world record holders for heifer and cow sale sales - and some outstanding sires including Jock of Cullerne, Rushmore Bracken and Hamish of Crannog Rhu. We crossed a Highland bull with the Angus girls who were either not implanted or did not hold their embryo.
After many learning experiences and some patience, in Spring 2023 our ET calves (FIB grade) hit the ground, as well as the Angus x Highland crosses. We had a lucky ratio with our ET calves - 3 heifers and a bull
